The Holy Spirit will teach you everything and remind you of all I told you.  Alleluia, alleluia!

A reading from the holy Gospel according to John (21:15-19)

After Jesus had revealed himself to his disciples and eaten breakfast with them,
he said to Simon Peter,
“Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?”
Simon Peter answered him, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.”
Jesus said to him, “Feed my lambs.”
He then said to Simon Peter a second time,
“Simon, son of John, do you love me?”
Simon Peter answered him, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.”
He said to him, “Tend my sheep.”
He said to him the third time,
“Simon, son of John, do you love me?”
Peter was distressed that he had said to him a third time,
“Do you love me?” and he said to him,
“Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.”
Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep.
Amen, amen, I say to you, when you were younger,
you used to dress yourself and go where you wanted;
but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands,
and someone else will dress you
and lead you where you do not want to go.”
He said this signifying by what kind of death he would glorify God.
And when he had said this, he said to him, “Follow me.”

Reflect: Do you love me? Jesus asked this question of Simon Peter not once, but three times. To each response, Jesus gave Peter a command to take action: “Feed my lambs”; “Tend my sheep”; and “Feed my sheep”.  Love requires service, sacrifice and commitment. Peter was entrusted with being the shepherd of the Church. For us, too, Jesus asks us on a daily basis, “Do you love me?”  We can respond quickly, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.”  When we answer like that, however, Jesus is asking us to do something on his behalf – something to build up his Body, the Church. Love builds up the Body. Love nourishes the Body. Love provides for the Body. No matter how small or how great our roles, we all share responsibility in giving life to Christ’s Body. As we prepare for the great Solemnity of Pentecost, let’s ask Jesus for the gifts we need from the Holy Spirit to build up and sustain his Body. Jesus needs us to continue his mission.

Questions: What is my response to Jesus’ question: “Do you love me more than these?” How do I demonstrate to Jesus my love for him, for his Body?  What gifts am I lacking to fulfill the call to be a disciple that serves, builds up and nourishes his Body? Can I put myself completely at the service of the Holy Spirit to provide me with the gifts I need based on my state in life?

Pray: Loving God, send out your Holy Spirit upon me. Help me to love and serve you with all my heart. May all aspects of my life reflect my love for you and your Body, the Church.  I pray this in the powerful and perfect name of Jesus. Amen.

When the Spirit of truth comes, he will teach you all truth, says the Lord.  Alleluia, alleluia!

Saints Marcellinus, a priest, and Peter, an exorcist, were martyred by beheading in the early years of the 4th century. It is said that they continued their ministry in prison, converting many of their fellow prisoners, along with the jailor, Arthemius, and his wife and daughters. Their executioner converted, as well, and shared the story of their holy deaths.
