Don’t be Misled
Malvern Minute

June 7, 2017 – Wednesday of the Ninth Week in Ordinary Time

I am the resurrection and the life, says the Lord; whoever believes in me will never die. Alleluia.

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark (12:18-27)

Some Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection,
came to Jesus and put this question to him, saying,
“Teacher, Moses wrote for us,
If someone’s brother dies, leaving a wife but no child,
his brother must take the wife
and raise up descendants for his brother.

Now there were seven brothers.
The first married a woman and died, leaving no descendants.
So the second brother married her and died, leaving no descendants,
and the third likewise.
And the seven left no descendants.
Last of all the woman also died.
At the resurrection when they arise whose wife will she be?
For all seven had been married to her.”
Jesus said to them, “Are you not misled
because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God?

When they rise from the dead,
they neither marry nor are given in marriage,
but they are like the angels in heaven.
As for the dead being raised,
have you not read in the Book of Moses,
in the passage about the bush, how God told him,
I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac,
and the God of Jacob
?
He is not God of the dead but of the living.
You are greatly misled.”

Reflect: You are greatly misled. The Sadducees in today’s gospel are intent to have Jesus support their theological perspective that there is no resurrection from the dead. They create what they believe to be a seamless argument that would prove their point. Jesus, however, quickly demonstrates the holes in their thinking. Were they humble enough to accept it as a lesson learned or would their hearts become intent on destroying Jesus? Only God knows their hearts; but Jesus tries to wake them from their misunderstanding, at least, or, perhaps, even hardness of heart by saying: “He is not God of the dead but of the living. You are greatly misled.”  There are times when we can be like the Sadducees and let the prevailing thought of the day dominate our way of thinking about or believing in God. Sometimes we can be misled. Jesus invites us to pay close attention to his words. He wants us to take time to reflect and meditate upon the Word of Life, the Sacred Scripture.  In the first reading today (Tobit, chapter 3), God speaks to the heart of both Tobit and Sarah who were in despair. Their perspective on life was completely changed and they were renewed with hope. Our God wants nothing more than for us to sit humbly before him so that we can invite and welcome the Holy Spirit to lead us and guide us on the path of truth, the path of life.

Questions: Am I willing to accept that sometimes I can be misled and need the enlightenment of the Holy Spirit to get back on track? Do I take time to read and meditate upon the Word of God? Is there any particular issue that Jesus might be inviting me to step back and pray about so that I can be sure that I’m in unity with God and his Church?

Pray: Loving God, lead me on the path of life. Help me to meditate on your holy word, and send out your Holy Spirit to enlighten my heart and mind.  I pray this in the powerful and perfect name of Jesus. Amen.

To you I call, for you will surely heed me, O God; turn your ear to me; hear my words.
