I have always been struck by the simplicity of the Annunciation story.  There is so much drama, here, but the story is told in a very straight-forward and direct way.  Some theologians say that the drama draws back so as to highlight the magnificence of the mystery of the Incarnation.

A young girl is visited with astonishing news from an angel and she accepts the news willingly and without reservation.  God’s love visits the earth and the process of redemption goes into warp speed with Mary’s absolute YES!  With her yes she is convinced that Gabriel’s message “the Lord is with you” was the only thing that really mattered.

It has been speculated that Mary was a teenager when she was visited by the angel, and, naturally, she was fearful.  That fear would be abated as the messenger assured her, “Do not be afraid Mary.”  This is the very beginning for Mary who would be turned into the woman of faith in her relationship with Christ.

Mary is our model for acceptance and invitation to faithfully respond to the Word of God in our lives.  Her response to Gabriel’s announcement models for us our acceptance of God’s invitations in our own relationship with Him.  When Jesus calls us do we ask ourselves:

  • Am I ready?
  • Am I up to the task?
  • Do I deserve to be in this position?
  • How will it work out for me?

Sisters and brothers, we, like Mary, need to focus not on ourselves, but on the Lord who calls us as we give Him our “unconditional YES!”

Question of the Day:  When you hear the voice of God will you respond to Him with an unconditional Yes?

Prayer:  Lord God, please flourish my heart with a genuine and unconditional love that will benefit other people and me.  Let the demonstrations of my love result in the glorification of your Holy Name.  Amen.
