John 6:37-40

What happens to us when we die?  We Catholics believe that we will be judged.  After judgement three choices await us; hell, purgatory or heaven.  Hell is for those who have rejected God.  Heaven is for those who die as saints.  Purgatory is for everyone else.  Obviously we would all like to go immediately to heaven when we die but are we living in such a way that we will die as saints?  Would it be more realistic to expect to spend time in purgatory being purified?  Only perfect love can see God face to face.  While in purgatory we are purified so that we will one day have that opportunity to see God face to face.

Today, and during the Month of Souls, we pray for all the souls who are still in purgatory undergoing purification and growing in love before they are ready to join the saints in heaven.

As Catholic Christians we believe that God is all merciful and that Jesus’ passion, death and resurrection saved us but does not excuse us from being purified.  Jesus saved us but that does not excuse us from being purified.  Expiation for sin must be made either in this life or the next.  So how then do we pray for the souls in purgatory?

Actually, we can help the souls in purgatory in many ways:

  • Having Mass offered for the soul of a departed loved one is the greatest help we can offer them. oly H
  • Praying for all the souls (the faithful departed) in purgatory is extremely important
  • We can offer our fasting, almsgiving, and pilgrimages to Holy Sites in atonement for the sins of those in purgatory.
  • Visiting a church or oratory and praying the Creed and one Our Father
  • Praying for our Holy Father the Pope’s intentions.
  • Daily reception of Holy Communion.
  • Receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
  • Visiting a cemetery and praying for the faithful departed.

Today touches us all in a very personal way because it is a day of mixed emotions.  It is our day to remember and miss those who were so special to us.  We must also reflect on our own existence as well.  Each one of us is a soul – a soul on a journey.  We are still waling on that journey to become all that we were meant to be, a child of God enjoying eternal life with Him and all the saints in heaven.

Question of the Day: Will you remember to pray for all the faithful departed in this Month of Souls and throughout the year?

Prayer:  Father in heaven, may those who we remember today have perpetual shine upon them, may their souls not only rest but also be at peace.
