Andrew told his brother Simon: We have found the Messiah, the Christ, and he brought him to Jesus. Alleluia!

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew (4:18-22)

As Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers,
Simon who is called Peter, and his brother Andrew,

casting a net into the sea; they were fishermen.
He said to them,
“Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.”

At once they left their nets and followed him.
He walked along from there and saw two other brothers,
James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John.
They were in a boat, with their father Zebedee, mending their nets.
He called them, and immediately they left their boat and their father
and followed him.

Reflect: At once they left their nets and followed him. Jesus was immersed in the ordinary activities of his life in Galilee. He was walking along the sea, observing the typical routine of the day with fishermen in their boats, casting nets. But yet, when he made the invitation to Andrew and the other disciples, they stopped what they were doing and followed him. Suddenly, their priorities were changed. They were doing what they were trained to do; making a living as fishermen; comfortable in their daily activities while providing for their families. But, wham! Their hearts were touched by the presence of Jesus. They were stirred to respond to something that they had no idea about. They responded, nonetheless, because they heard and recognized the voice of the Shepherd. Jesus is immersed in the ordinary activities of our day. He accompanies us in all that we do. He is speaking to us, hoping that we will hear and recognize his voice. He is calling us because he wants us to make his ways our priorities. He wants us to turn over our work, our goals, our desires, our training, and our lifestyles more to him so that we are completely united with him in all things. May we be willing to have ears that hear and hearts that are receptive to all that Jesus wants to give us and all that he asks of us as his disciples. He continues to call his people. Are we listening?

Questions: Even in the busyness of the day, do I try to find ways to carve out silence and quiet so that I can hear the voice of God? If I sense the inspiration of the Holy Spirit to take action for my own spiritual growth or to do an act of charity, do I follow through on it? Am I trying to be more intentional about my attentiveness at Mass, to the sacraments, or any other ways that Jesus might be inviting me to encounter him?

Pray: Loving God, through the intercession of Saint Andrew, may I be willing to listen to your voice and respond to your call to be your disciple in the world today.  I pray this in the powerful and perfect name of Jesus. Amen.

Saint Andrew: Pray for us!

According to Pope Benedict XVI, Andrew was “a man who was searching.” He lived with his heart thrown open, awaiting the presence of the Messiah. After his call, Andrew walked with Jesus. Following the Resurrection and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, Andrew became a missionary sharing the Good News. Tradition holds that he preached north of the Black Sea and in Greece. He died bound to an X-shaped cross at Petras. He is the patron of Russia and Scotland. He is recognized as “Protoclete” or “First Called” by the Greek Church, of which he is the patron. Andrew is also considered the patron of the fishing industry.
