A reading from the first Letter of Saint Peter (5:5b-14)

Beloved:
Clothe yourselves with humility
in your dealings with one another, for:

God opposes the proud
but bestows favor on the humble.

So humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God,
that he may exalt you in due time.
Cast all your worries upon him because he cares for you.

Be sober and vigilant.
Your opponent the Devil is prowling around like a roaring lion
looking for someone to devour.
Resist him, steadfast in faith,

knowing that your brothers and sisters throughout the world
undergo the same sufferings.
The God of all grace
who called you to his eternal glory through Christ Jesus
will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you
after you have suffered a little.

To him be dominion forever. Amen.

I write you this briefly through Silvanus,
whom I consider a faithful brother,
exhorting you and testifying that this is the true grace of God.
Remain firm in it.
The chosen one at Babylon sends you greeting, as does Mark, my son.
Greet one another with a loving kiss.
Peace to all of you who are in Christ.

Reflect: Your opponent the Devil is prowling around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist the devil and be steadfast in faith. Stay sober and alert.  This reading is full of wisdom.  The truth is that, although defeated, the devil is constantly prowling looking for ways to sweep in and mess up our lives with false promises and outright lies. Saint Peter is well aware of the temptations out there so he wants us to be prepared. We aren’t alone. He reminds us, “Your bothers and sisters throughout the world undergo the same sufferings.” However, our hope rests on the true and everlasting promise: “Christ Jesus will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you after you have suffered a little.” Given the challenges in life, we are susceptible to temptations and the lure of the evil one. During this Easter season we are especially encouraged to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world. He is the fullness of truth. As we grow in our relationship with Jesus, we pray that he will give us the grace to resist the roaring lion who is looking for ways to devour us. Be strong!

Questions: Am I conscious of the lure of evil and temptation? How is Jesus inviting me to strengthen my relationship with him so that I am anchored in his love and his truth? Do I believe that even if I have to suffer for resisting evil, God will always restore me and lead me to the joy of his goodness?

Pray: Loving God, you are my hope, my peace and my salvation. Please provide for me the grace I need to stay close to you, to resist the devil and to proclaim you to all the world.  I pray this in the powerful and perfect name of Jesus. Amen.

We proclaim Christ crucified; he is the power of God and the wisdom of God. Alleluia!

Saint Mark: Pray for us!
