Behold Your Mother
Malvern Minute

September 15, 2017 – Our Lady of Sorrows

Blessed are you, O Virgin Mary; without dying you won the martyr’s crown beneath the Cross of the Lord. Alleluia!

A reading from the holy Gospel according to John (19:25-27)

Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother
and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas,
and Mary Magdalene.
When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple there whom he loved
he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son.”
Then he said to the disciple,
“Behold, your mother.”

And from that hour the disciple took her into his home.

Reflect: Behold, your mother. We find Mary at the foot of the cross on Calvary. Where else would she be? Throughout her life, this perfect vessel of God’s grace experienced the crucifixion in many forms. As only a mother could, her heart was wounded repeatedly as she suffered with Jesus. His “Yes” to the Father, intertwined with Mary’s original fiat: “Be it done unto me according to your will.” Mary’s incredible witness of trust became a gift to us. From the cross, Jesus gives us his mother as our own: “Behold, your mother.” We need the maternal presence of Mary as we experience our own wounds, our own crucifixion. She links us to Jesus. Our own trials in life are united to the cross. The cross no longer is some distant spiritual image; rather, it is our real life redemptive experience. And we are not alone. Jesus forever wanted his mother to be our mother who would show us compassion, comfort and love in the midst of life’s burdens, pains and sorrows. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now, and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Questions: Do I take the time to recognize the awesome gift that Jesus gives me in his mother? Do I welcome the presence of Mary as my mother and share with her all my life experience especially my pain, burdens and suffering? How might Mary be inviting me to become more united with the Heart of Jesus?

Pray: Loving God, when your Son was lifted high on the Cross his mother was close by to share in his suffering. Help me to walk with Mary in that sorrow so that I might also merit a share in Christ’s Resurrection.  I pray this in the powerful and perfect name of Jesus. Amen.

Christ, when you shall call me hence,

Be your Mother my defense,

Be your cross my victory.

By the 14th century, the sorrows of Mary numbered seven: the presentation of Jesus in the Temple; the flight into Egypt; Jesus being lost in Jerusalem; the meeting of Mary and Jesus on the way to Calvary; the crucifixion; the taking down of Jesus’ body from the cross; and his burial.
