Discovering the This
Malvern Minute

January 9, 2018  Tuesday of the First Week in Ordinary Time

Receive the word of God, not as the word of men, but as it truly is, the word of God. Alleluia, alleluia!

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark (1:21-28)

Jesus came to Capernaum with his followers,
and on the sabbath he entered the synagogue and taught.
The people were astonished at his teaching,
for he taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes.
In their synagogue was a man with an unclean spirit;
he cried out, “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth?

Have you come to destroy us?
I know who you are–the Holy One of God!”
Jesus rebuked him and said, “Quiet! Come out of him!”
The unclean spirit convulsed him and with a loud cry came out of him.
All were amazed and asked one another,
“What is this?
A new teaching with authority.
He commands even the unclean spirits and they obey him.”

His fame spread everywhere throughout the whole region of Galilee.

Reflect: What is this? A new teaching with authority. Although believers, the people gathered at the synagogue had never experienced a message and a teaching with such authority as that of Jesus. Even the evil spirits obeyed him.  The people were “astonished” and “amazed”, and “his fame spread.” In the previous verses, prior to this Gospel passage in Mark, Jesus proclaims: “This is the time of fulfillment. The Kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the Gospel.” He, then, begins to call the apostles. He is establishing his purpose, his mission. The work and words of Jesus were not intended for him to draw fame or attention to himself, but to direct people to the Father and to draw them in to understand the Kingdom of God. For some, Jesus was just a bit of amazing entertainment. Even the unclean spirit cried out: “I know who you are – the Holy One of God!” For others, Jesus would be recognized as the Messiah with a message that spoke to their heart about conversion and fulfillment of the Kingdom of God. Some were bystanders; others got engaged with God’s message of salvation. We are called not to stay at a distanced simply amazed by the great words and powerful acts of Jesus, but rather to listen to and act upon his word – the word of life.

Questions: Do I accept the Word of God as an opportunity to grow as a disciple or just some nice sounding words? Am I a bystander or engaged with Jesus’ proclamation of the Kingdom of God? How is Jesus calling me to conversion and maturity as a disciple?

Pray: Loving God, instill in me an understanding and appreciation for your word so that I may become an authentic disciple who proclaims that the Kingdom of God is at hand.  I pray this in the powerful and perfect name of Jesus. Amen.

With you, O Lord, is the fountain of life, and in your light we see light.
