Expecting the Unexpected
Malvern Minute

December 5, 2017 Tuesday of the First Week of Advent

Behold, our Lord shall come with power; he will enlighten the eyes of his servants. Alleluia, alleluia!

A reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah (11:1-10)

On that day,
A shoot shall sprout from the stump of Jesse,
and from his roots a bud shall blossom.
The Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him:
a Spirit of wisdom and of understanding,
A Spirit of counsel and of strength,
a Spirit of knowledge and of fear of the LORD,
and his delight shall be the fear of the LORD.

Not by appearance shall he judge,
nor by hearsay shall he decide,
But he shall judge the poor with justice,
and decide aright for the land’s afflicted.
He shall strike the ruthless with the rod of his mouth,
and with the breath of his lips he shall slay the wicked.
Justice shall be the band around his waist,
and faithfulness a belt upon his hips.

Then the wolf shall be a guest of the lamb,
and the leopard shall lie down with the kid;
The calf and the young lion shall browse together,
with a little child to guide them.
The cow and the bear shall be neighbors,
together their young shall rest;
the lion shall eat hay like the ox.
The baby shall play by the cobra’s den,
and the child lay his hand on the adder’s lair.

There shall be no harm or ruin on all my holy mountain;
for the earth shall be filled with knowledge of the LORD,
as water covers the sea.

On that day,
The root of Jesse,
set up as a signal for the nations,
The Gentiles shall seek out,
for his dwelling shall be glorious.

Reflect: The Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him: a Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, a Spirit of counsel and of strength, a Spirit of knowledge and of fear of the LORD, and his delight shall be the fear of the LORD. The Prophet Isaiah announces what a world with God and for God is intended to be. To recognize that world and to realize it in our midst requires trust in God, confident that transformation and new understanding will happen when the “Spirit of the Lord” renews and directs us. Our world needs to be remade and it can happen only when we take up the call to be missionary disciples dedicating ourselves to live in the wisdom, understanding, counsel, strength, knowledge, and the fear (reverence) of the Lord. That is when the unexpected becomes the expected: “Then the wolf shall be a guest of the lamb,
and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; The calf and the young lion shall browse together,
with a little child to guide them.”
As we journey through Advent, let’s embrace a new expectation; one that believes that God is the only one capable of truly transforming our world.

Questions: Do I put my trust and confidence in the power of God and his Spirit to renew the face of the earth? Am I dedicated to work together with the Lord as a missionary disciple? What sins do I need to ask forgiveness for so that I can be free to receive the gift of God’s Spirit and to bring God to others?

Pray: Loving God, by your compassionate help may I be consoled by the coming of your Son. Give me the courage to let go of my former ways so that I might be a powerful witness to God’s transformation of the world.  I pray this in the powerful and perfect name of Jesus. Amen.

Behold, the Lord will come, and all his holy ones with him; and on that day there will be a great light.
