Feast of the Holy Innocents, Martyrs

December 28, 2019

Deacon Anthony J. Cincotta

Assistant Director for Retreat Ministry

First Letter of John 1:5-2:2

Psalm 124

Matthew 2:13-18

Today is the Memorial Feast of the Holy Innocents.  The Feast commemorates the massacre of the infant boys “two years old and under” by order of the insecure King Herod who heard about the new-born king.  He thought that everyone was a threat to his throne.  These innocent victims were the flowers and first-fruits of the Savior’s legions of martyrs.  The untold number of young boys triumphed over the world without having ever known it or experienced its dangers.

On this day we pray for the millions of children throughout our world who suffer through any form of violence which threaten their lives, dignity, benefit of food, shelter and education and the right to worship God.  These forms of violence, neglect and oppression show us that even in our time, children have “Herod’s” to fear.

We must always remember that children are wonderful gifts from God.  They are wonderful gifts because their sense of wonder is amazing and their attitudes are inspiring.

We must also remember that children occupy a very special place in the Sacred Heart of Jesus.  When His disciples were shooing them away He did the opposite.  He lets them in and welcomes them.  Do you remember when He said, “Amen, I say to you, unless you turn and become children, you will not enter the Kingdom of heaven.  Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven.  And whoever receives one child such as this in my name receives me.  Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.  (Matthew 18:3-6)    May God bless and protect all children today and always.

Question of the Day:  Will you do your very best to protect children – especially the unborn?

Prayer:  Lord God, today we recall that the Innocent Martyrs bore witness not by words but by their death.  Grant that our way of life may give witness to our faith in You which our lips profess.
