The royal official who approaches Jesus is a Jew and probably in the service of Herod Antipas.  His son is ill and asks Jesus to come to his home to cure him.  But Jesus instructs him to go home and assures him his son will live.  Our Lord does this to put the official’s faith to the test.  When the official arrives home he finds that his son is alive.  It is because he placed his trust in Christ’s Words.  Additionally, because this miracle had occurred his whole household becomes believers.  Let’s take a few moments and reflect on our faith in Jesus’ Holy Words:

First, let us have faith in Christ’s Words.  In Saint John’s Gospel we read, “The man believed what Jesus said to him and left.”  Jesus cures the official’s son because he placed his trust in His word.  He believes in Jesus.  He has no proof, only the Word of Jesus.  In our prayer’s Christ offers us His Word.  We are called to trust in His Words without proof and He assures us that He is with us.  We know that Jesus is faithful to His promises.  Therefore, it is through faith in Jesus Christ and believing in His Holy Word that we have the greatest of all gifts; life in eternal happiness.

Second, His Word makes us better persons.  In the first moment of the encounter the royal official gives little thought to Christ’s Words.  But just as the official experienced we too are touched by Jesus’s Words so as to give us courage to accept what is to be.  As a result, we, the household of Jesus, come to believe.

Question of the Day:  Do you believe the Holy Words of Jesus, our Lord and receive strength from the promises He has made to all of us?

Prayer:  “Everyone who lives and believes in me will never die.”  (John 11:26)
