Friday of the Fifth Week in Ordinary Time

February 12, 2021

Deacon Anthony J. Cincotta

Saint Mary Magdalen parish, Media, Pa

Book of Genesis 3:1-8

Psalm 32:1-2, 5, 6-7

Mark 7:31-37

Today’s readings are essentially a quick summary of our relationship to God.  In the Book of Genesis we are reminded of the sin that separates us from God.  It is as real for each of us as it was back in the Garden for Adam and Eve.  I suspect that every one of us feels the pang of guilt now and then.  Fortunately though in Psalm 32 we are reminded that the sins of those who acknowledge them and confess them to the Lord are forgiven.  We can never “cover up” our guilt, but our Lord does.  God promises us that not only are our sins forgiven, but that we don’t need to be afraid of them.

Friends, we are all children of the New Testament which means that our ears should be opened and our voices heard to the comforting and encouraging Words of Jesus who is the Kingdom of God among us.  As children of the New Testament we all live in the light of the promises of the Good News that is Jesus Christ.  Jesus is the proclamation of the Good News in Word and Deed in our lives.  He is our miracle!  He heals all of us!

The Good News message in today’s Gospel narrative is the fulfilment of the promises of God for healing and resurrection; not just for our bodies but for our spirits as well.  The message that needs to be shared with the world is that of openness to the on-going process of redemption and salvation through the Words of Jesus.  Through His Words we are healed and made whole spiritually.  There in itself is a miracle.  Today we pray with joy and gratitude for Jesus who is God the Father’s promise to free and shelter us from our sins.

Question of the Day:  How will you, through your baptismal promise, bring the Good News of Jesus to the world?

Prayer:  “Open our hearts, O Lord, to listen to the Words of Your Son.  Alleluia, alleluia.”
