Book of the Prophet Ezekiel

Psalm 130

Matthew 5:2-26

The first person to hate his brother was Cain.  In the Book of Genesis God warns Cain, “Why are you so angry?  Sin is couching at the door; its desire is for you, but you must master it!”  Sin doesn’t just happen; it first grows as a seed in one’s heart – often times that seed grows quickly and anger is upon us.  Unless it is mastered that seed grows like a weed and chokes the fruitful vine.

In our Gospel today is one of the experiences that moved people to remark that Jesus spoke with authority, and not like the scribes.  The scribes could only claim authority by quoting from Scripture.  Jesus does the same thing but He improves on the original text.

Our Lord teaches us that unless forbidden and evil desires are eradicated, the hear twill be corrupted.  He points to forbidden anger with one’s brother.  His message of anger in the heart as well as in the way we speak or even our actions is forbidden.  So what is the antidote to anger and rage?  Mercy, kindness, and forbearance spring from a heart full of love and forgiveness.  Something many of us find difficult to do.

In the Sacrament of Reconciliation god offers us forgiveness for our sins and He calls us to extend mercy and forgiveness towards those who cause us harm and grief.

Question of the Day:  Do you see in the cross of Jesus as the supreme example of love and power of overcoming evil?

Prayer:  “If you, O Lord, mark iniquities, who can stand?”  (Psalm 130)
