Friday of the First Week in Ordinary Time

January 17, 2020

Deacon Anthony J. Cincotta

Assistant Director for Retreat Ministry

Memorial Feast:  Saint Anthony of Egypt (251-365) – Patron Saint of Butchers

First Book of Samuel 8:4-7, 10-22a

Psalm 89

Mark 2:1-12

Today the Church celebrates the feast of a monk who lived for 104 years.  Saint Anthony of Egypt lived during the third and fourth centuries and is one of the earliest so-called “Desert Fathers.”  Anthony is considered both in the Eastern and Western Churches to be one of the founders of monasticism.  Many pilgrims came to him for spiritual guidance.  In one of his writings, Saint Athanasius of Alexandria, one of the Doctors of the Church, praised Saint Anthony for his many innovative ideas.

In today’s Gospel narrative Jesus, like Saint Anthony, has many followers.  We heard, “Many gathered together so that there was no longer room for them.” This kind of makes it sound like Jesus is pretty popular in His ministry.  This Gospel, as in many others, has similar aims.  The aim of the friends of the paralytic was the man’s physical healing.  Jesus takes it to a higher level and not only heals his body but forgives his sins as well.

Our Lord could have easily spent His entire earthly life working physical cures and raising people from the dead.  Doing this would lead to immense popularity and most probably great wealth as well.  But Jesus did not come into the world for “fifteen minutes of fame.”  He came into our world to teach all of us love for our neighbors, the humility in asking for God’s help in our times of trial, and to be selfless in order help those in need.  Just as the four men did who cared for the paralytic and just as Saint Anthony did in the desert.

Question of the Day:  Are you prepared to trust in Jesus, the Divine Physician?

Prayer:  Lord, I trust in You.  Strengthen my weaknesses and make me always more generous in the spirit of sacrifice.
