Acts of the Apostles 13:26-33

Psalm 2

John 14:1-6

I must confess that today’s Gospel from Saint John is, by far, my absolute favorite.  The office of deacon has allowed me to assist at hundreds funeral Masse’s and preside at countless funeral services at funeral homes.  In many cases the Gospel narrative for today is used.  It is used because it is the greatest expression of hope given to us by our Lord just before He ascends to the Father.  Let me explain.

We have the apostle Thomas to thank for asking Jesus, “Master, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way?”  Jesus responded, “I am the way and the truth and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through me.”  This is the heart of Paul’s homily from our first reading from Acts as he speaks in the synagogue.  He tells every one who is “God-fearing” that those who condemned Jesus fulfilled the ancient prophecies, that is, God’s promise to His children.

Basically, Paul has one homily; he presents the same message of salvation  at different places and manages to make his point over and over again.  His preaching is always about Jesus, the Son of God, and the One begotten from the Father.

God the Father placed His stamp on Jesus; He affirms that Jesus is indeed the Way, the Truth, and the Life.  Those were Paul’s “words of salvation” to every group he spoke to, both large and small.

There are many people today, some you may know, who have never believed in Jesus and do not know the “Way.”  “The Way” is the term used for the Church as it was recorded in the first chapters of the Acts of the Apostles.  The apostle’s message and teachings to the world is that they actually knew “The Way.”  They taught that the Way leads us to eternal life, to peace in the midst of suffering, and to the triumph over sin and death.   The Way is Jesus Christ!  The Way is to trust in Jesus – there is no other WAY!

Sisters and brothers, may I humbly suggest that you read today’s Gospel narrative and feel the emotion, the love and the promise made by our Lord to His apostles and to the entire world.  I t is His promise of hope, comfort and everlasting joy – don’t you think?

Question of the Day:  How will you share the truth that Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life of our salvation?

Prayer:  Eternal Father, Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ is the way, the truth and the life for all creation.  Grant us the grace to walk in His Way, to rejoice in His Truth, and to share in His Risen Life.  Amen.

Please continue to pray for the victims of the Coronavirus and for all who are affected by this unprecedented pandemic.
