Isaiah 7:10-14

Psalm 24

Luke 1:26-38

In our first reading, Isaiah predicts what will happen centuries into the future.  We are told that a virgin will conceive a son and call him Emmanuel.  “Emmanuel – God with Us.”  Isaiah’s message to the Jewish people is to be persistent in their hope and trust in God despite the difficulties of their journey in life.  And so it should be with all of us.

The story of the Annunciation in Luke’s Gospel demonstrates how Mary is a model of hope and trust in God’s plan for our journey.  So Mary has found favor with God.  Just like Eve was the mother of all humanity which was doomed to sin, now Mary becomes the mother of the new Adam who will father a new humanity by His grace.  This child to be conceived in her womb is the fulfilment of all God’s promises.

Mary is the “Mother of God” because God becomes incarnate when He takes on flesh in her womb.  When we pray the Nicene Creed we state our profession of faith in the great mystery; “For us men and for our salvation He came down from heaven, and by the power of the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.”

God gives all of us grace and he expects us to respond with the same willingness, obedience, and heart felt trust as Mary did.  By her example, let us ask our Blessed Mother to bolster our hope and trust in God so that we can accept and follow the journey that He has preordained for us.  As Mary did let our “YES” help us live a grace-filled life by believing in the divine message of her Son.

Question of the Day:  Will you give your life to Mary’s Son as she did?

Prayer:   Mother Mary, I beg you, by that grace through which the Lord is with you and you with Him, let your mercy be with us.
