Letter to the Hebrews 10:32-39

Psalm 37:3-4, 5-6, 23-24, 39-40

Mark 4:26-34

One might say that it is impossible for us to accomplish great deeds.  However, we are all perfectly able to accomplish any number of small deeds.  I suspect that the last lines of today’s Gospel narrative are calling our attention to this fact, urging us to do what we can with what little we think we have.  That is, to seize the opportunities that God gives us in the people He sends into our lives, as well as the difficulties and challenges He presents us with.  We do not enter the “Kingdom” with one great leap of faith.  We are life-long pilgrims who know our “Destination,” know our “Guide,” and advance one step at a time on a “Way” that is sometimes narrow and difficult as well as sometimes smooth and joyful.

The Kingdom is a small seed to start with and grows only slowly and is invisible in us day by day to become this “largest of all shrubs.”  But we must remember that it is not us who are responsible for the growth.  God Himself is the one working through us, achieving His saving work, if we cooperate with Him.

Today let us focus on the joy that our Father feels as we work to be like Him in our little deeds.  Let us be simple, loving generous and ready to forget ourselves for the sake of others.

Question of the Day:  How will you center yourself on the present moment, on what God offers you and asks of you here and now?

Prayer:  Today we pray that the seed of God’s Holy Word take root in our lives and transform us into fruitful disciples of Christ the Lord.  Amen.
