Deacon Anthony J. Cincotta

Assistant Director for Retreat Ministry

Memorial Feast:  Saint Cecilia, Virgin and Martyr (3rd century) Patron Saint of Musicians

First Book of Maccabees 4:36-37, 52-59

Psalm (First Chronicles 29)

Luke 19:45-48

We all know that Jesus went up to Jerusalem knowing that He would meet certain death on the cross.  His reaction to the money-changers and others at the temple was meant to be a warning to the people of God that God takes worship seriously.  Jesus was angry and somewhat violent on this occasion.  Can you blame Him?

St. Augustine wrote, “Jesus did nothing by force but everything b y persuasion and admonition, but he threw out the sellers and buyers from the temple by flogging them.”  He further said, “Jesus cast out demons against their will, so why not the money-changers?”

God’s House is indeed a House of prayer and a House of reverence.  We must ask ourselves on a regular basis what is God’s House to me personally?  The answer is not in the Catechism of the Catholic Church.  Today’s Gospel passage challenges us to assess the things we do in Church and how we respond to the things other people do in Church.  The way a parishioner dresses, if they are chewing gum, arriving late or leaving early (without a justified excuse,) not seeing to their children as they should are concerns for all of us.  I only wish I had the answer to rectify these issues.  Our praying for these folks is not a bad idea.

But God’s House is also in our own homes as well.  Our home is the “Domestic Church.”  This is the place where we pray as a family, teach our children and grandchildren about the faith and how to lead the lives of Catholic Christians when we are away from our parish church.

Sisters and brothers, we must ask the Lord for the courage to always stand by Him and speak strongly against all evil in His House.  May He always help us to make His House to be truly a place of prayer by the way we conduct ourselves anywhere and everywhere we go.

Question of the Day:  Will you pray for all those persons who have fallen-away from the faith to return to Mass and the Holy Eucharist?

Prayer:  Father, we pray that all who enter Your Holy Church gives reverence to You as your Son has taught us to do.
