Memorial Feast: Saint Pope John XXIII ((1881-1963)

Joel 1:13-15; 2:1-2

Psalm 9

Luke 11:15-26

There is a story of an old Native American chief who told his grandson a story one evening about a battle that goes on inside all people.  He said, “My son, the battle is between two wolves inside us all.  One is Evil.  It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guild, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority and ego.”

“The other is Good.”  It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, consideration and faith.”  The grandson thought for a while and then asked his grandfather, “Which wolf wins?”  He said, “The one you feed.”

Dr. Norman Vincent Peale in his book, “Inspiring Messages for Daily Living” gave some suggestions on how to do it:

  • Practice loving people
  • Look for something to praise in people
  • Practice believing in people
  • Practice helping others
  • Pray for people who have offended you
  • Congratulate people on their accomplishments
  • Pray daily that all self-consciousness may leave you

If we take the suggestions of Dr. Peale then we can say that we are feeding the “Good Wolf” within us and are in unity with the teachings of Jesus.

Question of the Day:  in which kingdom do you belong?  Is it the Kingdom of God or the kingdom of the devil?

Prayer: Almighty God, make me faithful in the smallest things.  Never  let me forget that I must answer everything before You.
