Friday of the Twenty-Sixth Week in Ordinary Time

October 4, 2019

Deacon Anthony J. Cincotta

Assistant Director for Retreat Ministry

Memorial Feast:  St. Francis of Assisi (1181-1226)

Baruch 1:15-22

Psalm 79

Luke 10:13-16

Francis of Assisi has captured the heart and imagination of the people of the world by his love for God and man, as well as all God’s creatures, by his simplicity, directness, and single-mindedness.  He was a man who was possessed of vast spiritual insight and power; a man who’s all consuming love for Christ was displayed in everything he did and to everyone he met.

In today’s short Gospel narrative, Jesus tells His disciples that the people of several towns have chosen their sinful ways over listening to Him.  It’s frustrating that our current culture, like Jesus’ Chorazin, Bethsadia and Capernaum, isn’t listening to Jesus or His disciples as well.

Jesus tells His disciples, “Whoever listens to you listens to me.”  Jesus is telling us that just because we have accepted Him do not mean that they are going to heaven. (Is 14:14-20)

The Gospels portray repentance, forgiveness and reconciliation at the center of Jesus’ preaching and teaching.  We have been given the ability to respond to Christ through our Baptism.  As Catholic Christians we need to accept our responsibility to repent, forgive and reconcile with each other and with God.

Question of the Day:  Do you truly “listen” to and heed the Words of Jesus?

Prayer:  God, You enabled St. Francis to imitate Christ by his poverty and humility.  Walking in St. Francis’ footsteps may we follow Your son and be bounded to You by a joyful love.  Amen.  (From “Illustrated Lives of the Saints.)
