God’s Beautiful Building
Malvern Minute

November 9, 2017 – Feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica

I have chosen and consecrated this house, says the Lord, that my name may be there forever. Alleluia, alleluia!

A reading from the first Letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians (3:9c-11, 16-17)

Brothers and sisters:
You are God’s building.
According to the grace of God given to me,
like a wise master builder I laid a foundation,
and another is building upon it.
But each one must be careful how he builds upon it,
for no one can lay a foundation other than the one that is there,
namely, Jesus Christ.

Do you not know that you are the temple of God,
and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?

If anyone destroys God’s temple,
God will destroy that person;
for the temple of God, which you are, is holy.

Reflect: You are God’s building. Jesus is our foundation. It is only upon him that we can build. He is our Rock, our Hope, our Salvation! Today, we celebrate the feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica. It is an impressive and massive place of worship in Rome. It gets so much attention because it is the Cathedral Church of Rome (the Pope’s Basilica), but that place can seem far away and detached from our own reality. At the same time, this feast calls our attention to recognize the sacredness of all churches as places dedicated to render praise and honor to God. Importantly, also, this feast reminds us that we are God’s temple. In so being, there is a personal call for each of us to convert so as to form a well-ordered life that gives God praise; a life that cooperates with God’s grace and that stays united to Jesus Christ, our foundation. We are created so that our lives might be beautiful structures that remind others about the magnificence of God. We are created to be sacred, part of the Body of Christ. Because of that, Jesus is not only pouring out grace upon grace to sustain us in our daily battles, but he is also calling us to reconciliation so that we might always be drawn back to and maintain the holiness, the sacredness, that is his creation. May we always stay united to our Life Giving Rock!

Questions: Am I aware that I am God’s beautiful and majestic structure, built upon Jesus as my foundation? What kind of renovation might my life need at this point?  Do I humbly recognize that I can’t do it alone, but that I need to trust in the Master Builder and Architect, Jesus Christ, to get the work done right?

Pray: Loving God, my life is like a living stone in your hands. Use me to build up your Kingdom so that more people might be drawn to you and desire to remain with you forever.  I pray this in the powerful and perfect name of Jesus. Amen.

Be built up like living stones, into a spiritual house, a holy priesthood.
