Gospel Reflection: Holy Saturday
Malvern Minute

HOLY WEEK — MARCH 21 – MARCH 27, 2016

Holy Saturday, March 26, 2016

Prophet Hosea 5: 15 – 6:3

I will go back to my place until they make reparation

and seek my presence.

In their affliction, they shall look for me.

“Come let us return to the Lord,

For it is he who has torn, but he will heal us;

He has struck down, but he will bind our wounds.

 He will revive us after two days;

on the third day he will raise us up, to live in his presence.

 Let us know, let us strive to know the Lord;

as certain as the dawn is his coming.

 He will come to us like the rain,

like spring rain that waters the earth.”

The Word of the Lord

If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts!

The following is from an ancient homily for Holy Saturday:

Something strange is happening – there is a great silence on earth today, a great silence and stillness.  The whole earth keeps silence because the King is asleep.  The earth trembled and is still because God has fallen asleep in the flesh and he has raised up all who have slept ever since the world began.  God has died in the flesh and hell trembles with fear.

From ancient time, on Good Friday and this day, Holy Saturday, the Church refrains from the celebration of the Sacraments except for the Anointing of the Sick and Reconciliation/Penance.  The Church is in deep meditation knelling at the Lord’s tomb.  Church members embrace fasting from bodily excitements and concentrate on reflecting on Christ’s Passion, Death, and descent into Hell!

Through His death, the Incarnate Son of God has remained faithful to the Father and has accepted even death, death on a cross.  Now the Church awaits the reliable response of the Father: the Church awaits the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Like on Good Friday, the Church does not offer the Sacrifice of the Mass.  The altar table is bare, the baptismal font is without water and the Church is devoid of fire.  During the celebration of Christ’s Resurrection at the Easter Vigil, the Church will bless the fire that gives flame and life to the Christ Candle; she will bless the water that will give Eternal Life to those seeking Baptism; and she will adorn her altar with new cloth and flowers for the celebration of the sacred meal and sacrifice of Holy Mass.

But now, she waits; she prays; and she anticipates the fullness of life that only Christ can bring!  This Holy Saturday is so like each day of the believer’s life.  For each day we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ.

Today is the model of prayerful anticipation that permeates every day.  Every day we reflect on Sacred Scripture listening to His Word so as to not lose our way; every day we offer ourselves in complete trust to God even without words; and every day we await the fullness of Life that only Christ can give!

For our sake Christ was obedient, accepting even death, death on a cross.   Therefore God raised him on high and gave him the name above all other names.  (Responsory from the Liturgy of the Hours)
