A reading from the Book of Revelation (12:7-12ab)

War broke out in heaven;
Michael and his angels battled against the dragon.

The dragon and its angels fought back,
but they did not prevail
and there was no longer any place for them in heaven.

The huge dragon, the ancient serpent,
who is called the Devil and Satan,
who deceived the whole world,
was thrown down to earth,

and its angels were thrown down with it.

Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say:
Now have salvation and power come,
and the Kingdom of our God
and the authority of his Anointed.

For the accuser of our brothers is cast out,
who accuses them before our God day and night.
They conquered him by the Blood of the Lamb
and by the word of their testimony;

love for life did not deter them from death.
Therefore, rejoice, you heavens,
and you who dwell in them.”

Reflect: They conquered him by the Blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony. As we commemorate the Archangels Michael, Gabriel and Raphael, we are reminded that there was a war in heaven between Michael and his angels, and the dragon (the Devil or Satan) and his angels. Michael and his angels prevailed, but “Satan, who deceived the whole world, was thrown down to earth.” We celebrate the victory over evil, but the presence of the Devil on earth is real and he seeks to ruin souls. The battle continues. But we have hope, for: “They conquered him by the Blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony.” We know that through the crucifixion, death and resurrection of Jesus our victory is won – by “the Blood of the Lamb.” At the same time, we rely heavily upon the testimony of the saints, living and deceased, who proclaim faith, trust and victory in the Lamb of God.  On this feast of the Archangels, we ask for the protection and intercession of Michael, Gabriel and Raphael; we, also, pray for the grace to have a strong faith so that we might always have the courage and conviction to fight the good fight by giving testimony to the truth of our salvation: Jesus Christ, our Savior, the Son of the Living God! Alleluia!

Questions: Do I invoke the intercession and protection of Saint Michael and the other Archangels? Do I acknowledge that evil exists and that I need to be prepared for the battle against it? Is my heart filled with faith to give testimony to Jesus Christ as my Savior and the Savior of the world? What do I need to do to grow in faith?

Pray: Loving God, you give the Church angelic ministries. Please grant that my life on earth may be defended by those who watch over me as they minister perpetually to you in heaven. I pray this in the powerful and perfect name of Jesus. Amen.

Saint Michael, Gabriel and Raphael: Pray for us!

These biblical messengers signify God’s transcendence and loving care: Michael (meaning “Who is like God?”), Gabriel (“God’s Strength”), and Raphael (“God’s Remedy”). Michael is the patron of security forces and of the sick; Gabriel of telecommunications and the postal service; and Raphael of travelers and the blind.
