John 11:19-27

Many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary
to comfort them about their brother [Lazarus, who had died].
When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him;
but Mary sat at home. Martha said to Jesus,
“Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.
But even now I know that whatever you ask of God,
God will give you.”
Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise.”
Martha said to him, “I know he will rise, in the resurrection on the last day.”
Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life;
whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live,
and anyone who lives and believes in me will never die.
Do you believe this?”
She said to him, “Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God,
the one who is coming into the world.”

Reflect: Jesus makes a bold proclamation that he is “the resurrection and the life,” and he asks Martha, sister of the deceased Lazarus, if she truly believes in him and in the promise of everlasting life. Martha, even in the midst of her grief, confidently proclaims her unrestrained faith in Jesus as the Savior, the Son of God.  In countless ways, Jesus asks each of us to make that same profession of faith; not just with words, but with our entire mind, heart and being.

Do I unreservedly believe that Jesus is the Savior of the world?  Is my faith and trust in Jesus manifest by the way I live and in how I conduct the affairs of my life?

Pray: Loving God, I believe that you are the resurrection and the life. Help me to direct all aspects of my life toward you. Help me to proclaim my faith in you by the way I live, so that there is no doubt that you alone are my salvation. I pray this in the powerful, perfect name of Jesus. Amen.
