The Holy Gospel According to Luke (12:1-7)

At that time:
So many people were crowding together
that they were trampling one another underfoot.
Jesus began to speak, first to his disciples,
“Beware of the leaven–that is, the hypocrisy–of the Pharisees.

“There is nothing concealed that will not be revealed,
nor secret that will not be known.
Therefore whatever you have said in the darkness
will be heard in the light,
and what you have whispered behind closed doors
will be proclaimed on the housetops.
I tell you, my friends,
do not be afraid of those who kill the body
but after that can do no more.
I shall show you whom to fear.
Be afraid of the one who after killing
has the power to cast into Gehenna;
yes, I tell you, be afraid of that one.
Are not five sparrows sold for two small coins?
Yet not one of them has escaped the notice of God.
Even the hairs of your head have all been counted.
Do not be afraid.
You are worth more than many sparrows.”

Reflect: In contemporary parlance, Jesus is reminding the crowd that God has their back. Not just in a general sense, but he cares about us so intimately and particularly that he has numbered all the hairs of our head. We aren’t walking this world alone.  God the Father, Jesus the Savior, and the Holy Spirit Advocate accompany us during every nano-second of every day.  It is up to us whether we acknowledge their presence and lean on them in every aspect of our lives, or do we try to remain independent and isolated from their Divine Love.

Do I completely turn over all of my thoughts, words, deeds and deliberations to God each day?  What stops me from accepting all that God has to offer me? Do I let God speak to me about how incredibly precious I am to him?

Pray: Loving God, help me to trust you and lean on you for all things and at all times. Take away anything that interferes with me accepting your love, care and mercy.  I ask this in the powerful, perfect name of Jesus. Amen.

Saint Callistus: Pray for us!
