The Holy Gospel according to Luke (6:12-16)

Jesus went up to the mountain to pray,
and he spent the night in prayer to God.
When day came, he called his disciples to himself,

and from them he chose Twelve, whom he also named Apostles:
Simon, whom he named Peter, and his brother Andrew,
James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew,
Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus,
Simon who was called a Zealot,
and Judas the son of James,

and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.

Reflect: Jesus called the apostles to assist him in establishing the foundation of the Church not because they were perfect, but because they were the right men at the right time, and for all eternity, to bear witness to his love and mercy in the world.  They shared a special intimacy with Jesus as they accompanied him through the itinerant classroom of everyday life. Today, we remember the apostles Simon and Jude who, on the same day, suffered martyrdom for the sake of the Gospel. Tradition highlights a particular devotion to Saint Jude Thaddeus for his intercession on behalf of hopeless and desperate cases. Who of us doesn’t have recourse to the saints, particularly Saint Jude, for such matters from time to time?

Do I invite Jesus to take me under his direction so that I can learn from him about how to be his disciple in the world today?  Do I turn to the saints for their intercession when I have a special need to place before the Lord?

Pray: Loving God, through the intercession of Saints Simon and Jude, please hear the prayers of my heart for myself, for my loved ones and for those who ask me to pray for them.  I ask this in the powerful, perfect name of Jesus. Amen.

Saints Simon and Jude: Pray for us!
