A Reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke (19:45-48)

Jesus entered the temple area and proceeded to drive out
those who were selling things, saying to them,
“It is written, My house shall be a house of prayer,
but you have made it a den of thieves.

And every day he was teaching in the temple area.
The chief priests, the scribes, and the leaders of the people, meanwhile,
were seeking to put him to death,
but they could find no way to accomplish their purpose
because all the people were hanging on his words.

Reflect: The Church exists so that we can experience an encounter with Christ who heals us, forgives us and gives us true life.  As disciples of Christ’s Body – the Church – we are commissioned to share the Good News about our encounter with Christ so that the Kingdom of God may grow and flourish. We can’t experience the fullness of Christ’s love, nor can we be authentic disciples if the Body of Christ is compromised in some way; if we fail to be a genuine “house of prayer”.  That extends to our families, as well. Families, our homes, are to be the domestic church.  If our families are not directed to Christ and we fail to turn to him daily, we are falling short. He must be the foundation upon which we build our house – the domestic version as well as the Church universal.  Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne, whose life we remember today, was a model of prayer. In fact, the Potawatomi Indians, among whom she served, named her Quah-kah-ha-num-ad, “Woman-Who-Prays-Always”.  The call for each of us is to center ourselves in Christ in whatever situation we find ourselves.

Do I dedicate time for prayer every day? Is my personal life and that of my family directed to Christ? Is there anything that I need to do to help cleanse my life, and, ultimately, the Church from being a “den of thieves” so that Christ can be made manifest in all that I do?

Pray: Loving God, help me to seek Jesus with all of my heart, my mind, my very being, so that I can always remain connected to him and make him know in the world by the way I live. I ask this in the powerful, perfect name of Jesus. Amen.

Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne: Pray for us!
