A Reading from the book of the Prophet Isaiah (48:17-19)

Thus says the LORD, your redeemer,
the Holy One of Israel:
I, the LORD, your God,
teach you what is for your good,
and lead you on the way you should go.
If you would hearken to my commandments,
your prosperity would be like a river,
and your vindication like the waves of the sea;

Your descendants would be like the sand,
and those born of your stock like its grains,
Their name never cut off
or blotted out from my presence.

Reflect: Jesus shows us what God the Father wants of us. In today’s Gospel (Matthew 11:16-19), he likens “this generation” to children in the marketplace who want others to march to their whim or fancy.  That is what we encounter on a daily basis: the chatter of the world telling us what we need, what we should do, how we should live. So much of the world is closed to the presence of God and his message. Through the Prophet Isaiah, however, we hear a simple direct message: “I, the LORD, your God, teach you what is for your good, and lead you on the way you should go. If you would hearken to my commandments, your prosperity would be like a river, and your vindication like the waves of the sea;” So as we move forward in the Advent journey, we are encouraged to turn off the chatter that fills our heart and mind so that we can hear the voice of God; so that we can see where he is leading us; and, we can be attentive to his instruction.  Saint Juan Diego encountered Our Lady of Guadalupe while he was about his daily responsibilities, and, later, when he was seeking out a priest to anoint his dying uncle. Even though he met with resistance even from the Church, he maintained a spirit of expectation before God. Mary responded to his docile heart with a miracle that set in motion a wave of evangelization that had never been seen before. Millions came and continue to come to God through the apparitions of our Lady of Guadalupe.

How is the chatter of the world claiming space in my heart and my mind? How might God be inviting me to be still and listen to his voice during this Advent season?  What can I do about it?

Pray: Loving God, lead me, guide me, show me the way to you. Give me a heart that desires your commandments so that I might live in your grace and that my life might flourish.  I ask this in the powerful, perfect name of Jesus. Amen.
