A Reading from the holy Gospel according to John (5:33-36)

Jesus said to the Jews:
“You sent emissaries to John, and he testified to the truth.
I do not accept testimony from a human being,
but I say this so that you may be saved.
John was a burning and shining lamp,
and for a while you were content to rejoice in his light.
But I have testimony greater than John’s.
The works that the Father gave me to accomplish,
these works that I perform testify on my behalf
that the Father has sent me.”

Reflect: John the Baptist “was a burning and shining lamp” – the precursor of Christ. But the message and works of Jesus confirm that he alone is the Savior. Jesus was sent by the Father to embrace humanity with a message of love and forgiveness.  His relevance has not waned.  Jesus’ message continues to speak to the heart of humanity. He invites us to embrace his message and to carry it forward as his disciples. As we receive Jesus and his Word, it isn’t for our edification alone; he calls us to be the new burning and shining lamps in the world who announce his presence; people who are dedicated to draw attention to him and his message. Jesus Christ is the gift. We are called to be the gift bearers who make him known by the way we live and conduct ourselves in this crazy, challenging and, increasingly, secular society.

Am I ready to receive Jesus and share him with others? Do I believe that Jesus and his message have relevance in the world today? How and why? In what ways might Jesus be asking me to be his disciple and to give witness to him through my everyday life?

Pray: Loving God, I thank you for the living gift of Jesus the Savior. Please send out your Holy Spirit to give me a heart of discipleship so that I can share him and his message with many others.  I ask this in the powerful and perfect name of Jesus. Amen

Holy God; Holy and Might One; Holy and Immortal One: Have mercy on us and on the whole world!
