A Reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke (1:57-66)

When the time arrived for Elizabeth to have her child
she gave birth to a son.
Her neighbors and relatives heard
that the Lord had shown his great mercy toward her,
and they rejoiced with her.
When they came on the eighth day to circumcise the child,
they were going to call him Zechariah after his father,
but his mother said in reply,
“No. He will be called John.”
But they answered her,
“There is no one among your relatives who has this name.”
So they made signs, asking his father what he wished him to be called.
He asked for a tablet and wrote, “John is his name,”
and all were amazed.
Immediately his mouth was opened, his tongue freed,
and he spoke blessing God.
Then fear came upon all their neighbors,
and all these matters were discussed
throughout the hill country of Judea.

All who heard these things took them to heart, saying,
“What, then, will this child be?
For surely the hand of the Lord was with him.

Reflect: It was a long, challenging, merciful journey for Zechariah and Elizabeth as they anticipated the birth of their son, John. Through it all, they learned trust and obedience as God showed them his awesome power and love – all part of bringing his Salvation into the world. Those who watched this moment unfold took it to heart.  The hand of the Lord continues to be with us.  He calls us to be attentive to his voice and to take it to heart. He calls us to witness and to then give testimony of his awesome mercy and love.  God is not dead. He is truly alive and present in the world today!

Can I take the time to calm down for a few minutes, to be still and quiet, so to hear and observe how God is truly present in my life? How might God be asking me to give testimony to his presence and his desire to be known in the world? Maybe through kindness, love, compassion, generosity, mercy, patience; taking time to listen and care about others?

Pray: Loving God, you do great and marvelous things. Help me to cooperate with your grace so that I can make you known to others by the way I live my life in conformity with your will.  I ask this in the powerful and perfect name of Jesus. Amen

A child shall be born for us, and he will be called God, the Almighty; every tribe of the earth shall be blest in him! (Cf. Is 9:5; Ps 72 (71):17)

WE BELIEVE, AND THEREFORE SPEAK (2 Corinthians 4:13)
