First Book of Kings 19:9a-13

At the mountain of God, Horeb,
Elijah came to a cave, where he took shelter.
But the word of the LORD came to him,
“Go outside and stand on the mountain before the LORD;
the LORD will be passing by.”

A strong and heavy wind was rending the mountains
and crushing rocks before the LORD—
but the LORD was not in the wind.
After the wind there was an earthquake—
but the LORD was not in the earthquake.
After the earthquake there was fire—
but the LORD was not in the fire.
After the fire there was a tiny whispering sound.
When he heard this,
Elijah hid his face in his cloak
and went and stood at the entrance of the cave.
A voice said to him, “Elijah, why are you here?”

Reflect: Elijah was trying to discern the voice of the Lord in the midst of a hurricane-like wind, in an earthquake, and in a great fire; but, finally, he heard God speak in a whispering breeze. As much as we want to be good disciples and follow God’s direction, we really can’t hear his voice in the midst of the 24/7 chatter and distractions that fill our world.  God invites us to the sounds of silence; those quiet moments and places that we create so that we can be still and listen.  That’s where we’re likely to find him and discover his voice.

Pray: Loving God, please give me the grace and discipline to put down the devices, to turn off the noise, and avoid the distractions that keep me away from you. Help me to find the sacred silence to listen to your tender voice calling me to life; calling me to you.  Amen.
