Matthew 9:9-13

As Jesus passed by,
he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the customs post.
He said to him, “Follow me.”
And he got up and followed him.
While he was at table in his house,
many tax collectors and sinners came
and sat with Jesus and his disciples.
The Pharisees saw this and said to his disciples,
“Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”
He heard this and said,
“Those who are well do not need a physician, but the sick do.
Go and learn the meaning of the words,
I desire mercy, not sacrifice.
I did not come to call the righteous but sinners.”

Reflect: Maybe there are times when because of our own pride we question the mercy of God. If I try so hard to follow Jesus and don’t seem to get rewarded, how is it that the big sinners are shown the mercy of God?  The Word of God, the grace of the sacraments, the love of Jesus is the medicine that heals wounds, forgives sins and brings mercy to those in need. He calls sinners not the righteous. In the first reading from the Old Testament Book of Amos, we hear that God is angry with those who are cheating and mistreating the poor and downtrodden.  God wants our hearts disposed to receive mercy and to show mercy – especially to those most in need. Jesus is clear about who are on his VIP list. Can we follow his example?

Pray: Loving God, please cleanse me from my pride and help me to be formed by your grace and your example. You show no restrictions to whom and no limits to the amount of mercy, forgiveness, and love poured out into the world. Make my heart more like yours. Remove exclusivity and prejudice from me, and help me to be a generous giver of mercy – without limit. Amen.
