Luke 8:16-18

Jesus said to the crowd:
No one who lights a lamp conceals it with a vessel
or sets it under a bed;
rather, he places it on a lampstand
so that those who enter may see the light.

For there is nothing hidden that will not become visible,
and nothing secret that will not be known and come to light.
Take care, then, how you hear.
To anyone who has, more will be given,
and from the one who has not,
even what he seems to have will be taken away.”
Reflect: This reading from the Gospel according to Luke reminds us that as followers of Christ, we are children of the Light.  The song that many of us learned as children has relevance: “This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine…”  The best way for us to honor God is to let his light shine through us – not to draw attention to ourselves, but to show the world how wonderful God’s gifts really are. To God be the glory and the honor!  Put another way, when the light is turned on us what do we want people to see? Goodness, kindness, generosity, gentleness, love, peace, forgiveness, reconciliation, mercy, wisdom – or something that is not of God?

Do I seek the light of Christ by the decisions I make?  Do I desire that the world see Christ’s light through the way I live?

Pray: Loving God, may your light take away from me anything that is not of you. Help me to choose to do good so that your light might be shown to the world through me.  I ask this in the powerful, perfect name of Jesus. Amen.
