A Reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke (21:1-4)

When Jesus looked up he saw some wealthy people
putting their offerings into the treasury
and he noticed a poor widow putting in two small coins.
He said, “I tell you truly,
this poor widow put in more than all the rest;
for those others have all made offerings from their surplus wealth,
but she, from her poverty, has offered her whole livelihood.”

Reflect: This short Gospel reading for today may appear, at first glance, as if it’s a lesson about giving monetary donations. It could be; but more than anything else we have a lesson about trusting in God.  For those of us who give to God from our abundance – monetarily, spiritually – we are often keeping the best for ourselves.  The heart of Jesus is drawn to the poor widow because he was aware that, in his midst, was someone who was pouring out everything she had for the sake of the Kingdom of God. She didn’t hold anything back. This poor widow gave her entire self to God.  Today, we celebrate the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Temple. Her parents, Joachim and Ann, followed the ancient tradition of bringing their child to the Temple as an act of offering the gift of a child back to God. In every moment of her life, Mary cooperated perfectly with the grace of God, holding nothing for herself. That act of trust was a key to the history of salvation. Mary’s fiat was a sincere and genuine act of trust. Through her, Jesus, the Savior of the World, was born.

What is it that I hold back on from God?  Is there some aspect of my life that I struggle to turn over to God? Would God ever misuse my trust in him?  What makes me fearful of trusting in God’s love, mercy and generosity toward me?

Pray: Loving God, you are the source of all that I have and all that I am. Help me to put everything I have, everything that I am into your care without hesitation. I ask this in the powerful, perfect name of Jesus. Amen.

Immaculate Heart of Mary: Pray for us!
