A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark (2:18-22)

The disciples of John and of the Pharisees were accustomed to fast.
People came to Jesus and objected,
“Why do the disciples of John and the disciples of the Pharisees fast,
but your disciples do not fast?”

Jesus answered them,
“Can the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them?
As long as they have the bridegroom with them they cannot fast.
But the days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them,
and then they will fast on that day.
No one sews a piece of unshrunken cloth on an old cloak.
If he does, its fullness pulls away,
the new from the old, and the tear gets worse.
Likewise, no one pours new wine into old wineskins.
Otherwise, the wine will burst the skins,
and both the wine and the skins are ruined.
Rather, new wine is poured into fresh wineskins.”

Reflect: Jesus brings a new and fresh message into the world and, in particular, into the heart and mind of each of us. Just as people came to Jesus questioning his practices and those of his disciples, we can fall into the same judgement. We expect everything to function based on our own perspective; however, Jesus brings us a message that is like new wine. We, in turn, need the grace to become like new wineskins that can hold the new wine rather than burst for an inability to trust and believe the message of the Savior. We need to pray for the grace to be receptive vessels to the truth of the Gospel. Jesus wants us to thrive in his life and message, rather than to become bitter and resentful because of an arrogance that closes us off to him.

How do I find myself creating barriers between myself and God? How might Jesus be challenging me to a deeper conversion by opening my heart and mind to the fullness of his message?

Pray: Loving God, please take away from me anything that blocks me from hearing your message inviting me to a change of heart. Upon hearing it, give me the courage to respond to you with boldness. I ask this in the powerful and perfect name of Jesus. Amen

Holy God; Holy and Might One; Holy and Immortal One: Have mercy on us and on the whole world!
