A Reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark (6:53-56)

After making the crossing to the other side of the sea,
Jesus and his disciples came to land at Gennesaret
and tied up there.
As they were leaving the boat, people immediately recognized him.
They scurried about the surrounding country
and began to bring in the sick on mats
to wherever they heard he was.
Whatever villages or towns or countryside he entered,
they laid the sick in the marketplaces
and begged him that they might touch only the tassel on his cloak;
and as many as touched it were healed.

Reflect: “As many as touched it were healed.” The people believed. They brought the sick and placed them in the marketplaces with the hope and belief that Jesus would have compassion upon them and heal them. They were healed not because of some magic in the tassel of Jesus’ cloak, but because they had faith. They came to believe that Jesus was the Messiah. The people were drawn to him because he brought something that they had never experienced before. So they opened their hearts trusting that God would have mercy upon them and set them free. Today the Church commemorates the martyrs of Japan who were tortured and killed by the order of the Shogun. Paul Miki and his companions believed that Jesus was their Savior and that he would accompany them in this world and lead them to the Kingdom of everlasting life. They suffered, but Jesus never let them down. May Jesus heal us of our fears and strengthen us to trust in his love and mercy no matter the circumstances of our lives.

Do I trust that Jesus hears me and will always respond to my cries?  Even if Jesus doesn’t answer the prayer of my heart in the way that I expect, do I believe that by putting my life into his hands he will never forsake me?

Pray: Loving God, I pour out my life before you. Give me the grace to encounter your Sacred Heart so that I might be healed from my hurts and brokenness and forgiven of my sins.  I ask this in the powerful and perfect name of Jesus. Amen.

Saint Paul Miki and Companions: Pray for us!
