Malvern Minute – Monday
Malvern Minute

March 27, 2017 – Monday of the Fourth Week of Lent

As for me, I trust in the Lord. Let me be glad and rejoice in your mercy,

for you have seen my affliction!

A Reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah (65:17-21)

Thus says the LORD:
Lo, I am about to create new heavens
and a new earth;
The things of the past shall not be remembered
or come to mind.
Instead, there shall always be rejoicing and happiness
in what I create;

For I create Jerusalem to be a joy
and its people to be a delight;
I will rejoice in Jerusalem
and exult in my people.
No longer shall the sound of weeping be heard there,
or the sound of crying;

No longer shall there be in it
an infant who lives but a few days,
or an old man who does not round out his full lifetime;
He dies a mere youth who reaches but a hundred years,
and he who fails of a hundred shall be thought accursed.
They shall live in the houses they build,
and eat the fruit of the vineyards they plant.

Reflect: I am about to create new heavens and a new earth. Life got you down? Sin have you burdened? Feel like you’re suffering with no purpose? Sometimes we wish that we could just start all over again. God tells us that there is going to be a remake. Ultimately, that will happen at the end times in the heavenly Kingdom.  Here and now, however, we already have Jesus Christ, who came proclaiming the Kingdom of God. In today’s Gospel passage (John chapter 4), a royal official is desperate. His son was dying so he put his hope in Jesus. As if to test the man, Jesus says: “Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will not believe.” Rather than becoming indignant or put out by those words, the man doubles-down with conviction and simply asks Jesus: “Sir, come down before my child dies.” Seeing his faith, Jesus responds: “You may go; your son will live.”  Jesus is our Hope and our Life. He doesn’t want us to wallow in pain, suffering or distress. He desires nothing more than for us to be rejoicing and filled with happiness. As we journey through Lent, let’s ask Jesus to recreate us; to fill us with faith and trust in his words; to lead us away from sin and a desire to remain close to him always. His promise is true: “I am about to create you like new.”

Questions: What part of my life do I need to completely turn over to Jesus? In what and in whom do I put my trust?  Do I trust and believe that Jesus is my true hope and the only one who can rescue me?

Pray: Loving God, you renew the world. Help me to trust in your eternal design, but to believe that you want to help me change my life for the better right now.  I ask this in the powerful and perfect name of Jesus. Amen.

Seek good and not evil so that you may live,

and the Lord will be with you.
