June 13, 2016 – Monday of the Eleventh Week in Ordinary Time

St. Anthony of Padua

Mark J. Poletunow, Malvern President (  (Readings for the day)

Matthew 5:38-39

Jesus said to his disciples:
“You have heard that it was said,
An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.
But I say to you, offer no resistance to one who is evil.
When someone strikes you on your right cheek,
turn the other one to him as well.

Reflect: The first reading today from the first Book of Kings exposes the murderous deceitfulness of Jezebel to sooth the wounded ego of her husband, King Ahab, after Naboth refused to sell his ancestral property to Ahab.  Over that, Naboth was falsely accused and stoned to death. That is the kind of injustice that makes us angry. Then in the Gospel today, Jesus seems to be out of his mind by instructing us to offer no resistance to evil and to offer the other cheek if someone strikes us. Jesus isn’t telling us to simply overlook injustice, but he is demonstrating that evil for evil, violence for violence is contrary to his message. As tough as it may sound, as difficult as it is to live, Jesus commands us to disarm our enemies with love and to overpower our persecutors with forgiveness. His power and that of his followers is contained in love and mercy.

Pray: Loving God, you know that my heart is often inclined to react fiercely when I’m hurt or offended. Please teach me self-control, wisdom and prudence so that I might understand how you desire to empower me and to glorify you through love and mercy.  Amen.
