Isaiah 1:15-17

When you spread out your hands,
I close my eyes to you;
Though you pray the more,
I will not listen.
Your hands are full of blood!
Wash yourselves clean!
Put away your misdeeds from before my eyes;
cease doing evil; learn to do good.
Make justice your aim: redress the wronged,
hear the orphan’s plea, defend the widow.

Reflect: In the reading from Isaiah as well as in today’s Gospel from Matthew (10:34 – 11:1), God is exhorting us to get our priorities straight.  Prayer without a properly disposed heart means nothing. It’s not just the words from our mouths, but the disposition of our very being, our actions must be inclined toward doing good – making justice our aim; redressing the wronged; responding to the orphan, the widow and all people pushed to the margins of society. Jesus wants us to take up our cross, to lose our life for his sake. Saint Benedict, whom we memorialize today, did just that in the Dark Ages of the sixth century and created an impact across Europe that is sustained throughout the world today. Is the way of the Gospel, justice, defense of the marginalized a priority for me? Do my prayers, my pleas before God reflect the disposition of my heart? How can the way of Jesus, the way of the Gospel become first in my life?

Pray: Loving God, purify my distracted heart. Help me to recognize the disconnect between the disposition of my heart and the words of my lips. Give me the grace to be one with you and to seek your ways, Jesus, at all times. Amen.
