Matthew 17:22-23

As Jesus and his disciples were gathering in Galilee,
Jesus said to them,
“The Son of Man is to be handed over to men,
and they will kill him, and he will be raised on the third day.”
And they were overwhelmed with grief.

Reflect: The reality of Jesus’ passion and death was too much for the disciples to bear: “And they were overwhelmed with grief.” They knew very well about the glory of God that Ezekiel writes about in the first reading; but to reconcile the tragedy of the suffering and death of Jesus was just too much for them to handle.  The truth of the resurrection and the exultation of God’s glory is known to us, but when we know that it requires a journey through the cross, we resist.  We are children of the Resurrection, but there aren’t any shortcuts. Like Jesus, we must experience the scandal and pain of the cross to know the fullness of God’s glory.  Even now we may be in the midst of a Good Friday, but, always, Sunday is coming for those who believe and trust in the Jesus as the Way.

Can I find hope in the cross? Do I believe that through baptism I am baptized into the death of Jesus so as to experience the fullness of his life?

Pray: Loving God, help me to keep my eyes fixed on the victory of your cross, not its scandal. Give me the strength and courage to embrace your cross and to desire you, and the fullness of life that is only in you. I pray this in the powerful, perfect name of Jesus. Amen.

WE BELIEVE, AND THEREFORE SPEAK (2 Corinthians 4:13)
