Matthew 13:47-50

Jesus said to the disciples:
The Kingdom of heaven is like a net thrown into the sea,
which collects fish of every kind.

When it is full they haul it ashore
and sit down to put what is good into buckets.
What is bad they throw away.

Thus it will be at the end of the age.
The angels will go out and separate the wicked from the righteous
and throw them into the fiery furnace,
where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.”

Reflect: This parable challenges us to make clear choices. Do we go all in for the Gospel, the Word of Life, or do we straddle with one foot in the Kingdom of God and the other in the world? The world can be good because it was created by God; however, humanity has distorted much of God’s creation to be something that it was never meant to be. Jesus calls us to be intentional; to choose holiness, to live as genuine disciples. At the end of time, unfortunately even folks who attend Mass every Sunday and contribute to their church will be thrown into the fiery furnace. Jesus calls us to a genuine change of heart that is transparent and is filled to overflowing with his grace. We can’t do it alone; he is offering a multitude of ways for us to repent, believe and put his life within us into action for the good of the world. When we take our last breath, he wants us to be counted among the righteous; but that journey has to start now.

What about my life is in conflict with the Kingdom of God? What relationships, television programs, internet sites, attitudes or activities are getting in the way of a deeper walk with Christ? What is holding me back from making a good confession so that God’s grace can cleanse me of my sinfulness and bring me closer to him?

Pray: Loving God, give me the grace to desire you and your ways without reserve. I invite you into all of those places in my life that need change and conversion. I can only change with your love, your grace, your mercy.  Help me to choose to walk in your ways, toward your Kingdom, and to leave behind anything that is not of you. I pray this in the powerful, perfect name of Jesus. Amen.
