Ezekiel 36:23b-28

Thus the nations shall know that I am the LORD, says the Lord GOD,
when in their sight I prove my holiness through you.
For I will take you away from among the nations,
gather you from all the foreign lands,
and bring you back to your own land.
I will sprinkle clean water upon you
to cleanse you from all your impurities,
and from all your idols I will cleanse you.
I will give you a new heart and place a new spirit within you,
taking from your bodies your stony hearts
and giving you natural hearts.

I will put my spirit within you and make you live by my statutes,
careful to observe my decrees.
You shall live in the land I gave your ancestors;
you shall be my people, and I will be your God.
Reflect: God never leaves us to fend for ourselves.  Even in the midst of our sin and our hard-heartedness, God does everything possible to call us back.  Jesus not only teaches us the way, but he provides the grace we need to follow him.  God gives us new life in Jesus, renews us in the Holy Spirit, and provides the sacraments as fuel for the journey. It is important for us to recognize our need for God – we have idols and stony hearts; we stray; we sin. His grace pours out in abundance – he is never cheap on love, mercy and grace!

Do I ask God to help me identify what parts of my heart need conversion from stone to natural?  Do I take advantage of the sacraments – especially reconciliation and Holy Eucharist – to fuel my journey with and toward God?

Pray: Loving God, change my heart; renew me. Chip the stone away so that the saving grace of your life blood can flow through every aspect of my being. I pray this in the powerful, perfect name of Jesus. Amen.

Holy God, Holy and Mighty, Holy and Immortal, have mercy on us!
