Matthew 24:42-44

Jesus said to his disciples:
Stay awake!
For you do not know on which day your Lord will come.

Be sure of this:
if the master of the house
had known the hour of night when the thief was coming,
he would have stayed awake
and not let his house be broken into.
So too, you also must be prepared,
for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.”
Reflect: “Stay awake!” Jesus understood the human tendency to become complacent and he knew that complacency would open the door to all kinds of thoughts and behavior that were not of God.  He exhorts the disciples to remain alert, to remain tuned-in to the voice of God, the Master, at all times.  In the first reading from the first chapter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians, Paul encourages the community by saying because, “…of the grace of God bestowed on you in Jesus Christ…you are not lacking in any spiritual gift as you wait for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ.”  Because God loves us and has graced us so generously, we have what it takes to be faithful; but we need to consciously choose his ways each day.  There is an urgency about which Jesus teaches not only the disciples, but us, too. Let’s stay alert so that we can make him known with each and every action, word and thought that comes out of us each day. We are his!  May we live and act that way always.

Am I complacent about my relationship with Jesus? What temptations do I need to turn over to Jesus so that I can stay alert and not be lethargic in my walk with him? What can I do to be more tuned-in to the voice of God in my daily life?

Pray: Loving God, thank you for your incomparable love and abundant grace that you generously pour out upon me. Wake me from my slumber. Help me to hear and listen to your voice constantly so that I might live as a true and faithful disciple.  I ask this in the powerful, perfect name of Jesus. Amen.
