Matthew 1:20-23

The angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David,
do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home.
For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her.
She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”
All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet:

Behold, the virgin shall be with child and bear a son,
and they shall name him Emmanuel,

which means “God is with us.”
Reflect: As we celebrate the birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Church reminds us that the ancestry of Mary, Joseph and Jesus is linked to real people at real moments in history. Just like us, they share a background with folks who were leaders, great examples of faith and great sinners; people who were confused and who didn’t always hear and obey the voice of God; people who were broken and incomplete. Regardless, God used each person along the way, as imperfect as they were, as stepping stones in the history of salvation. Without them, we wouldn’t have the life of Mary. Without her, we wouldn’t have the life of Jesus, our Savior. God writes straight with crooked lines. Happy birthday, Mary!

Do I rely on Mary and her intercession to help me find my way to Jesus?  Can I thank God not only for the life of Mary, but for my own ancestors, as broken and incomplete as they may have been? Can I trust that Mary loves me as a favored child?

Pray: Loving God, thank you for the life of Mary. Thank you for her fiat to your call. Help me to treasure her as your gift to me, and to trust that her love and her life can lead me to Jesus.  I ask this in the powerful, perfect name of Jesus. Amen.

Mary, blessed among women: Pray for us!
