Revelation 12:7-12ab

War broke out in heaven;
Michael and his angels battled against the dragon.

The dragon and its angels fought back,
but they did not prevail
and there was no longer any place for them in heaven.
The huge dragon, the ancient serpent,
who is called the Devil and Satan,
who deceived the whole world,
was thrown down to earth,
and its angels were thrown down with it.

Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say:
“Now have salvation and power come,
and the Kingdom of our God
and the authority of his Anointed.
For the accuser of our brothers is cast out,
who accuses them before our God day and night.
They conquered him by the Blood of the Lamb
and by the word of their testimony;
love for life did not deter them from death.
Therefore, rejoice, you heavens,
and you who dwell in them.”

Reflect: As we celebrate the feast of the Archangels, the Church reminds us that spiritual warfare is real. God commissioned the angels and archangels to assist in the work of salvation.  But we aren’t just recalling something from the past; a one and done reality. No; the victory of Christ over the power of Satan, over sin and death, the work of the archangels, and the testimony of the faithful to the Truth is ongoing and desperately needed. The presence of evil in the world is real, and requires an army of believers to defeat the ongoing attempts of Satan and all evil spirits that prowl through the world seeking the ruin of souls. We aren’t talking about fairy tales or pietistic hogwash – just take a look at the state of our society that perpetuates hatred, violence, murder, jealousy, unforgiveness, wicked lies, extreme selfishness, lack of mercy, etc.  In contrast, Pope Francis has declared an Extraordinary Year of Mercy to call to mind the pressing need for mercy, love, forgiveness, reconciliation, spiritual and corporal acts of mercy, and an injection of hope in the world.  Although Satan is hard at work to convince us otherwise: our God reigns!

Do I recognize the power and presence of the Archangels and their desire to assist me in my earthly battle? Do I pray asking for the assistance of the Archangels in dealing with the lure of evil and the attraction to sin that I face every day in subtle and vivid ways?

Pray: Loving God, thank you for the gift of the Archangels. Take the veil from my eyes that inhibits me from recognizing their presence and my need for their assistance.  I ask this in the powerful, perfect name of Jesus. Amen.
