The Letter of Saint Paul to the Ephesians (1:1-10)

Paul, an Apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God,
to the holy ones who are in Ephesus
and faithful in Christ Jesus:
grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
who has blessed us in Christ
with every spiritual blessing in the heavens,
as he chose us in him, before the foundation of the world,
to be holy and without blemish before him.
In love he destined us for adoption to himself through Jesus Christ,
in accord with the favor of his will,
for the praise of the glory of his grace
that he granted us in the beloved.

In Christ we have redemption by his Blood,
the forgiveness of transgressions,
in accord with the riches of his grace that he lavished upon us.
In all wisdom and insight, he has made known to us
the mystery of his will in accord with his favor
that he set forth in him as a plan for the fullness of times,
to sum up all things in Christ, in heaven and on earth.

Reflect: What a marvelous grace we have received from God the Father: “every spiritual blessing in the heavens… to be holy and without blemish before him.  In love he destined us for adoption to himself through Jesus Christ…”  What more can we ask?  We have an exceedingly generous and merciful Father who will do anything possible to draw us to himself.  He even sent Jesus, his only Son, to redeem us by shedding his blood.  He forgives us our sins and lavishes the riches of his grace upon us. Why?  Because he loves us not for anything we have done, but simply because he loves without limit all that he has created. Let us thank him and praise him without ceasing!

Have I stopped lately to consider how generously God blesses me?  Do I recognize that, despite my own sins and failings, God cannot be outdone in pouring out his love and mercy upon me?  Do I take time throughout the day to thank and praise God for his infinite love for me?

Pray: Loving God, thank you for your lavishing your love upon me. Help me to be aware of all that you provide for me. To you be praise, glory and honor!  I ask this in the powerful, perfect name of Jesus. Amen.

Holy God; Holy and Mighty One; Holy and Immortal One: Have mercy on us and on the whole world!
