The Letter of Saint Paul to the Ephesians (3:14-21)

Brothers and sisters:
I kneel before the Father,
from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named,
that he may grant you in accord with the riches of his glory
to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in the inner self,
and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith;
that you, rooted and grounded in love,
may have strength to comprehend with all the holy ones
what is the breadth and length and height and depth,
and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge,
so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

Now to him who is able to accomplish far more than all we ask or imagine,
by the power at work within us,
to him be glory in the Church and in Christ Jesus
to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

Reflect: Paul writes a beautiful prayer to the Ephesians. His earnest prayer is that they (and we) experience the depth of God’s love; that their (our) faith be rooted in a relationship, an encounter with Christ. Interestingly, today’s Gospel from Saint Luke captures Jesus saying, “I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing!” Jesus message of mercy and love does set the world ablaze. Not everyone is able to comprehend or accept that message, but it is so vital to life, our life with him. Saint Paul of the Cross, the founder of the Passionist Order, whose feast we celebrate today, desired to create a religious community rooted in proclaiming the Passion of Christ. It isn’t an easy message, but it is one that is essential to our faith and our relationship with Jesus.

When was the last time I paused to reflect on the depth of God’s love for me? Do I share in Jesus mission to set the earth on fire by letting his love shine through all that I do?

Pray: Loving God, may I have the strength to comprehend with all the holy ones what is the breadth and length and height and depth of Christ’s love.  I ask this in the powerful, perfect name of Jesus. Amen.

Saint Paul of the Cross: Pray for us!
