The Letter of Saint Paul to the Ephesians (6:10-20)

Brothers and sisters:
Draw your strength from the Lord and from his mighty power.
Put on the armor of God so that you may be able to stand firm
against the tactics of the Devil.

For our struggle is not with flesh and blood but with the principalities, with the powers, with the world rulers of this present darkness, with the evil spirits in the heavens.
Therefore, put on the armor of God, that you may be able to resist on the evil day and, having done everything, to hold your ground.
So stand fast with your loins girded in truth,
clothed with righteousness as a breastplate,
and your feet shod in readiness for the Gospel of peace.
In all circumstances, hold faith as a shield,
to quench all the flaming arrows of the Evil One.
And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit,
which is the word of God.

With all prayer and supplication, pray at every opportunity in the Spirit.
To that end, be watchful with all perseverance and supplication
for all the holy ones and also for me, that speech may be given me to open my mouth,
to make known with boldness the mystery of the Gospel
for which I am an ambassador in chains,
so that I may have the courage to speak as I must.

Reflect: Saint Paul reminds us that we face a spiritual battle every day and we need to be prepared just like a warrior going into battle: loins girded in truth; righteousness as a breastplate; feet shod for the Gospel of peace; faith as a shield; a helmet of salvation; and, the sword of the Spirit that is the word of God. We know that it isn’t easy out there. Each day our faith and faithfulness to the Word of God is challenged. There are so many elements like flaming arrows being flung at us. Precisely because of that, this scripture shared with us today is God’s way of encouraging us to be watchful, to persevere, to act in boldness and to speak with courage about the Truth of truths: Jesus Christ our Lord.

Can I take on the practice of imagining myself dressing each day with the battle gear of a warrior so as to remain strong in my faith?  In what areas of my life do I need to be more watchful and strengthened in perseverance so that I can act in boldness and speak with courage about the true foundation of life?

Pray: Loving God, please give me the grace I need to face all the battles that await me today. Help me to be faithful to you and your word in all that I do and say.  I ask this in the powerful, perfect name of Jesus. Amen.

Holy God; Holy and Might One; Holy and Immortal One: Have mercy on us and on the whole world!
