A Reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew (7:21, 24-27)

Jesus said to his disciples:
“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’
will enter the Kingdom of heaven,
but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven.

“Everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them
will be like a wise man who built his house on rock.
The rain fell, the floods came,
and the winds blew and buffeted the house.
But it did not collapse; it had been set solidly on rock.

And everyone who listens to these words of mine
but does not act on them
will be like a fool who built his house on sand.
The rain fell, the floods came,
and the winds blew and buffeted the house.
And it collapsed and was completely ruined.”

Reflect: In the first reading today from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah, we hear: Trust in the LORD forever! For the LORD is an eternal Rock” (26:4). Then, in the Gospel: “Everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock.” God sent Jesus into the world because there were too many foundations being built upon the sandy ground of power, prestige, wealth, ideologies, empty relationships, politics, self-indulgence and many other self-centric ideals.  Problem is that we continue 2000 years later to build our lives on the same sandy ground. Yes; we go to church, donate and even receive the sacraments, but, too often, our faith is in ourselves and we seek first what will satisfy ourselves.  Advent calls us to shift priorities from self to Jesus; from building on sand to claiming the Rock – and sticking to it!  As the Gospel reminds us, it’s easy to say, ‘Lord, Lord’, but to be people of true faith it takes a genuine welcome of Jesus, and a commitment to keep returning to him as our base day after day, moment after moment.

Who do I want to be and what do I seek in life? Is Jesus really my foundation? Do I trust in God or in something or someone else?

Pray: Loving God, please give me the grace to claim you as my Rock, my Fortress and my Deliverer – not just once, but always; not just in words, but from my heart. Help me to build my life on you as the only true and eternal foundation.  I ask this in the powerful, perfect name of Jesus. Amen.

Holy God; Holy and Mighty One; Holy and Immortal One: Have mercy on us and on the whole world!

WE BELIEVE, AND THEREFORE SPEAK (2 Corinthians 4:13)
