Mark 12:28-31

One of the scribes came to Jesus and asked him,
“Which is the first of all the commandments?”
Jesus replied, “The first is this:
Hear, O Israel!
The Lord our God is Lord alone!
You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart,
with all your soul, with all your mind,
and with all your strength.

The second is this:
You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
There is no other commandment greater than these.”

Reflect: These are a couple simple phrases to summarize all of the commandments: to love God with everything we’ve got, and to love others (especially the difficult ones) just as we’d love ourselves.  If that would be our goal every day, we wouldn’t be far from the Kingdom of God.  Sometimes it’s much easier said than done – actually that’s the case on most days.  It costs to love God in a world where his message isn’t popular. It’s a challenge to love others when our society teaches us to glorify the self and encourages an attitude of entitlement and exclusion.

Pray: Loving God, may I have the grace today to be your disciple: to love you with all of my heart, mind, soul, strength and very being, and to love my neighbor as myself. Whomever I encounter today, may they desire to know, love and serve you in this world, and desire to be with you forever in the Kingdom to come. Amen.
